Easter Camp Work Experience

We were lucky to have two camp volunteers with us this Easter, Conor and Hannah.

Conor and Hannah have both attended Blossom camps as campers themselves, so it was amazing to see how they have grown with the organisation, and are now being role models for the younger kids.

Conor volunteered with Blossom last summer, and once again proved to be a fantastic asset to the camp. Before camp, he wanted to ‘help play with the kids in the playground and help teach yoga’. As all of the camp staff can attest, Conor was not afraid to get stuck in and was a great leader for the younger kids. His sports skills really shone through when engaging the younger kids in playground activities and the obstacle course. Conor also had responsibility for looking after the visual schedule for his group, keeping both campers and staff on-track!

Hannah was particularly interested in gaining some more IT and office administration experience, so as office manager, I was delighted to have Hannah on-board to help. Hannah had some computer experience from school, so she took over  tasks such as making sure all staff had signed and returned their contracts, typing and printing reminder slips for parents, and organising personalised photo albums for each kids at camp. Hannah showed incredible attention to detail and she left the camp volunteer experience knowing more about her own strengths and interests in this area. Hannah plans to go to college and travel after she leaves school, and we have no doubt she will be successful in whatever career she chooses.

Our Blossom gateway programme, launched just this year, is designed to assist teenagers with an intellectual disability to learn how to be more independent with daily living activities. Buddies Gateway hopes to give the teens a chance to explore new opportunities and avenues for possible areas of work or further study after school. We plan to build on our work experience success with Conor and Hannah, to introduce more teens to different career paths, and give them the tools to make meaningful choices around their futures.
